Now that summer is coming to an end, there's one thing that's on all of our minds: Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Well, maybe not everyone is thinking about this popular drink, but we certainly are. Or, more specifically the supposed "main ingredient" that goes in them: pumpkin.
Believe it or not, pumpkin actually has more benefits than making an ultra sugary coffee drink, or even a smooth and buttery pie (are you hungry yet?). Not only does it have nutritional benefits for us, but it's good for our furry pals as well! There are many benefits when to having pumpkin in dog food and treats.
Is Pumpkin Actually Good for Dogs?
Pumpkin is a great source of nutrition for dogs. It is a perfect blend of soluble and insoluble fiber which works to slow down digestion. This slowing-down process increases the feeling of fullness and also increases moisture in the digestion tract to assist nutritient absorption.
While pumpkin is high in fiber, it's ultra-low on calories and fat, making it a great ingredient for pet food and treat manufacturers to include in their products. The fiber in pumpkin is a pre-biotic fiber which creates conditions for beneficial microflora growth in the lower GI tract. It's also an excellent source of many vitamins including A, C, and E and a great source of potassium.
